Yeah they were random (Corgis also had randomly generated names) but that’s no longer the case for the full release.

There’s gameplay outside the bar but we’ll talk about that in a future blog post.
It’s very rare though, it happens like twice throughout the game.

Yeah. The game draws inspirations from many sources, and Araki Joh’s Bartender is one of them. That manga (And anime) really nailed the whole “People going to a low-profile bar for a chat that will lead to them solving personal issues” that we were going for from the beginning. Although we wanted to make the characters more… punchy, in Bartender the characters are mostly defined by their problems and we wanted characters that you would remember for being themselves rather than the plot they bring to the table.
Fun fact time! The idea of calling the game (and the game’s bar) Valhalla actually came after remembering that Bartender’s bar in the anime was called Eden Hall.

All of the synths you hear in VA-11 HALL-A are from VST and Reason. Most of the synth sounds you hear are from the Fairlight Refill (modeled after Fairlight CMI) and Synth 1 VST tweaked a bit and layered together. For instance, the main line of Karmotrine Dream is a layer of a couple tweaked polysynths, a DX Piano, and a subtle brass samples.
